Details:
The r-process, or rapid neutron capture process, is a nucleosynthesis process that occurs in astrophysical environments with extremely high neutron densities and rapid neutron fluxes, such as supernova explosions and neutron star mergers. During the r-process, atomic nuclei rapidly capture neutrons, often much faster than they can decay via beta decay. This rapid neutron capture leads to the creation of neutron-rich isotopes of various elements. These newly formed isotopes undergo subsequent beta decays, converting neutrons into protons and thereby increasing the atomic number of the nucleus.
